"The Real Thing" - Mexican Coca Cola

I am a soda pop purist.  Glass bottles and pure sugar cane really are two things that make me happy.  So when I saw glass bottles of Mexican Coca Cola, I jumped at the chance to sample a taste of nostalgia.

First let me say this, the last time I had a Coke this sweet was in 1989.  My grandfather had glass bottles of Coca Cola in his basement fridge.  They had been there forever and when I say forever, I mean forever.  So when I cracked that bottle open, not only had it been aging like a $500 bottle of fine wine, it was vintage Coke from at least 1985.

Coke changed their recipie from cane sugar to corn syrup in 1985.  It's easy to understand how the Coke brand is a cult classic.  It's hard to understand why there is not a public outcry to change back to cane sugar.  Mexican Coke has a smooth flavor and sweet bite that are a far cry from what Coke is today.  That's what makes Mexican Coke so appealing.

I encourage you to try it for yourself.  Pick up a bottle, a bag of popcorn and be amazed at what you've been missing.  Visit Cravings Gourmet Popcorn and Soda Pop Market if you are a fan of glass bottles and pure sugar cane.

Our Resident Bier Meister Pairs Local Popcorn with Local Brews

As many of you know-not too long ago we made the journey to East Lansing to meet with the MSU Public Relations Student Society of America for our first ever focus group. We were delighted to share our new flavors with them and hear their thoughts on our products and our company. We were astounded by their insight. We heard from deeply thoughtful and creative students. One student in particular, PR dynamo Nick Lucido, made an interesting suggestion. At our request Nick provided the following blog post:

Matching Popcorn with… beer?

I first met the folks from Cravings Popcorn when they came to a student group meeting I attended at MSU. Looking to get in students’ minds, we were part of a huge focus group and we were encouraged to shout out some ideas. My first thought: popcorn and beer.

As a college kid, I’ve had my fair share of beer, and while I’m no expert, I definitely know what tastes good. More important than the beer, however, is what goes with it. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy some pretzels or peanuts and some beer in front of the TV on Saturday? So, this is where I come in: I sat down with some friends, picked up a variety of Michigan beers, and started matching beer with popcorn.

Seems simple, right? Well, we used the highly scientific method to calculate which beers enhance which sections of the taste buds… erm, we actually just wrote down what we liked. After trying 10 different beers and four different popcorns (yes, that’s 40 different combinations), we came up with our top three:

· Bells White Ale with cheddar-flavored popcorn. We found that the crisp flavor of the white ale compliments cheddar popcorn well. Both sides of this mix taste lighter than other combinations, yet it still packs a flavorful punch.

· Michigan Brewing Company Nut Brown with Signature Caramel. This one was my personal favorite; I found the nutty flavors of the beer to go really well with the signature caramel. The flavors mixed well and overall I really enjoyed this combination the most.

· Michigan Brewing Company Stout with Kettle Corn. We found that you need something salty to go with a dark stout beer, and we found that in the Kettle Corn. The stout hints at some chocolate flavors while the salty Kettle Corn keeps you thirsty for more beer. It’s sweet and savory at its finest!

Stay tuned for more flavors and more pairings: all Michigan made!

Craving Community Initiative

As we rush headlong into the holiday season, our thoughts are often centered on our family, friends and our community. At Cravings Popcorn, we are proud to call the Lansing community our home. Several organizations and individual people work to make this city a positive and vibrant environment and we would like to assist them in these efforts.

So, starting on a weekly basis in January 2010, Cravings Popcorn will be donating 3% of our Tuesday profits to a deserving local organization. We are happy to announce that our first partner in this "Craving Community" initiative is the Women's Center of Greater Lansing. This organization serves as an empowering resource for women as it provides a variety of services including individual and career counseling, support groups, and workshops.

Come help us celebrate Women's Center of Greater Lansing Day at our new City Market Location on Tuesday, January 18, 2009.
New City Market: 333 N Cedar St., Lansing, MI 48912
